Giraffe Manor
Nairobi
Giraffe Manor is one of Nairobi’s most popular boutique lodges. The Manor was originally built in 1932, it has been a hotel since 1984. Most of the hotel’s grounds are dedicated to the Giraffe Center and a group of them are always roaming the grounds.
Giraffe Manor is a very unique and very eccentric country house hotel that has enjoyed an enduring appeal since the 1930’s. Upon it’s opening it was very clearly the very best place to stay in Nairobi. Styled as a Scottish hunting lodge its architecture seems quite out of place in Kenya. Our numerous stays have convinced us that it’s still one of the best places in Nairobi.
If you’re planning to visit Giraffe Manor, book as early as you possibly can as rooms are often taken a year or more ahead.
Activities at Giraffe Manor
Adopt an Elephant
Visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi where you can adopt a baby elephant and see them feed from a bottle. You can adopt an elephant for US$ 50 (for two people), which allows you to visit them at 5:00 pm where you’ll see your baby put to bed. Alternatively, you can go at 11:00 am when the orphanage is open to the general public for a US$ 7 donation. Both experiences are very special. Transfers from Giraffe Manor are included at no extra cost.
AFEW Giraffe Center
Included in your stay at the manor is access to the AFEW Giraffe Center, which is a gentle stroll across the front lawn of the house. The center has some interesting background information on the rare Rothschild’s giraffes and also a small nature trail that can be good for stretching your legs.
Karen Blixen and Nairobi National Museum
Visit the Nairobi National Museum for an education in Kenya’s wonderfully rich heritage. Afterwards, you can enjoy the museum’s botanical gardens and something to eat or drink from the restaurant. This activity takes up half a day. Transfers can be included in a half day hire of a vehicle and driver. Five hours costs US$ 180 – for anything less than five hours please ask for a quote. An entry fee of KES 1200 or US$ 14 is payable directly to the museum. Open 8.30am to 7.30pm.
