Kulala Desert Lodge
Kulala Desert Lodge is situated at the foot of the Sossusvlei Dunes. Being the closest lodge to Sossusvlei this is the perfect place for introducing your family to the dunes of Namibia. Enjoy magnificent scenery on nature drives and walks while electric “fat bikes” are available to explore the spectacular open plains. Top off an extraordinary desert experience with a soaring hot air balloon flight over the dune field.
Desert-adapted wildlife on the reserve includes Ostrich, Springbok, Gemsbok, Spotted Hyena and the occasional Brown Hyena. Smaller creatures such as Bat-Eared Fox, Black-Backed Jackal, Porcupine, Cape Fox and Aardwolf can also be seen. One bird, the aptly named Dune Lark, has its entire global distribution limited to this area. A surprisingly diverse array of insects, reptiles and rodents make their home around the lodge. At dusk the call of barking geckos can be heard and walks reveal the smaller creatures such as buck-spoor spider and the ambush specialist Antlion.
Kulala Desert Lodge can be accessed by road however guests may not do self-drive activities in the private concession. Guests who wish to self drive into the Namib National Park are required to make use of the public Sesriem entrance which is 40 minute drive from the lodge.
Each guest suite is specially adapted to the unique desert conditions and is built on a platform to ensure maximum airflow. An extended thatch roof provides a cool respite from the sun. Each suite sits under thatch with gravel walkways between the buildings and main area. The lodge offers complimentary Wi-Fi access and en-suite facilities with shower, flush toilet and vanity basin and a veranda with view of the dunes. On the roof is a sleep-out platform where guests can sleep on a bedroll under the stars which is accessed by wooden stairs.
