Kwando Tau Pan
Central Kalahari Game Reserve
Kwando Tau Pan has been the pioneer safari camp within the boundary of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Constructed on a high sand dune the camp provides particularly beautiful views in a very unique landscape of Botswana. With views over the now famous Tau Pan it’s known for a stark desert beauty and a very remote location. Kwando Tau Pan offers game drives, full day excursions to Deception Valley through vast and desolate landscapes. As there is little light pollution star gazing here is extremely rewarding. Fascinating cultural interactions with Bushman trackers are well worth it.
“Tau” is the Setswana word for “Lion” and has been aptly named due to the very rare Black Maned Lions that are resident in the area. Antelope that are found in the Kalahari desert include Oryx, Springbok, Jackal, Brown Hyena and Wildebeest.
Nine environmentally constructed en-suite tents have been built on elevated wooden decks that afford stunning views over the plains. Each tented suite, including the family tent, has indoor and outdoor showers, double-basin vanity, King-sized double beds and a warm lounge area.
The focus of the main guest area is the outside fireplace which happens to be the best location for spotting game at the waterhole. A telescope is available to guests and staff are very happy to assist with identification. The bar, lounge, curio shop and dining area are all clustered around the fire place.
Kwando Tau Pan also has a sleep-out deck on the Eastern side of the camp. This is an experience not to be missed while on your safari in Africa. There is nothing quite so thrilling as sleeping out under the stars and the views of the heavens is difficult to comprehend. The elevated sleep-out deck consists of a double bed, basin and toilet. The star bed is available on a ‘first come first serve’ basis so when you arrive in camp be sure to request it. If you book Tau Pan for more than 3 nights then you can pre-book the star bed.
