Set back on the pristine waters of the Munyanga river and facing Bwindi Impenetrable forest the natural setting is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth, where over half the world’s population of highly endangered Mountain Gorillas live in its jungles.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Mahogany Springs is on the doorstep of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The forest provides habitat for some 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos and many endangered species. Floristically Bwindi is amongst the most diverse forests in East Africa, with more than 1,000 flowering plant species including 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns.

The main attraction – Gorilla Tracking.

This experience will change your life forever. Track the Gorillas on foot through the forest until you find them and spend around 1 hour watching them interact. Gorilla trekking must be booked prior to your arrival.

Some of the other activities on offer are:

Bird Watching – experienced bird watchers are known to identify up to 100 species a day in Bwindi. Bwindi contains 90% of all Albertine rift Endemic. Short-tailed Warbler, Rusty-faced woodland Warbler, Bar-tailed Trogon, Gruel’s Rush Warbler, Wilcock’s Honey-guide, Yellow-eyed black Fly-catcher, Kivu Ground Thrush, Dusky Crimson Wing, White-tailed Blue Monarch among many others, difficult or impossible to see in any other part of East Africa.

Tree Planting – offset some of the carbon you have used on your trip by planting a tree or shrub within the grounds. Once you have taken part in this activity you can feature on the tree planting gallery if you agree.

Various nature walks – Take a beautiful walk through various trails in the forest to the see waterfalls and other marvels.

Meet the Batwa (Pygmies) – The Batwa tribe only began leaving their forest homes around 15 years ago and still live locally. For the opportunity to meet them please book this in advance.

Community Tour – This fantastic experience can be arranged when you are at Mahogany Springs. The tour actually begins at Mahogany Springs where you walk across the river and around the community. It can last 2-3 hours. On the tour you will meet a local healer that will explain the various plants they use for medicinal purposes. Meet a few locals who will show you how they brew alcohol from banana leaves, From there you will meet other members of the community including some of the local Batwa tribe.

Garden Tour – Ask the Head Chef Subedi to give you a guided tour of your Vegetable garden. You will see that only the freshest ingredients are used in your meals.

How to Get There

Fly In

Fly into Entebbe with Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways or South African Airways.

You will be met at Entebbe airport and depending on your arrival time be driven to a hotel (if it is too late for a flight to Kihihi). Your driver will then collect you the following morning and return you to the airport for the 70 minute flight to Khihi where you will once again me met and transferred to the lodge.

If you arrive in Entebbe early in the day you will be met at the airport and escorted to your light aircraft for the 70 minute flight to Khihi where you will be met and transferred to Mahogany Springs.

Driving is an option however its a 12 to 13 hour drive traffic dependant – we have done this and do not advise our guests to undertake this adventure.
