Description
Mchenja Bush Camp
South Luangwa National Park
Arguably the most luxurious of all the Norman Carr camps, Mchenja Bush Camp lies in a grove of Ebony trees’ on the banks of the Luangwa River. There are expansive views over the river from almost every vantage point in the camp.
The main guest area is very open sitting under a thatch structure with magnificent views over the river. A corner has been dedicated to a lounge replete with a small library and is a great position from which to relax, enjoy the views and read a good book. The bar is a “help yourself” affair with bar chairs and the open plan extends out over the deck to more seating areas from which to enjoy the views.
It’s not uncommon to see herds of Elephant or Giraffe splashing their way across the river while Hippo and Crocodile bask in the sunshine. At the far end of the camp is a swimming pool.
Chalets
Mchenja is small but very chic with 5 tented chalets that are positioned on the rivers banks to maximize on the views and game viewing. Your chalet is very spacious and has been designed to be both light and open with canvas walls and curtains for additional privacy.
The polished cement floors are decorated with locally made “makuti” mats and a large en-suite open bathroom that is surrounded by reed walls. The bath has great views out over the river, perfect for an afternoon soak with your book and a cold drink. A small deck extends out towards the river that has deck chairs and more river views.
One of the chalets has a second en-suite bedroom that serves as the family tent, the extra room has three single beds.
