Description
The Highlands
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Highlands commands beautiful sweeping views that take in both sunrise and sunset. The landscape for which the lodge is named is both panoramic and incredible. With the sky clear it’s possible to see the Gol Mountains to the north west as well as the vast plains of the Serengeti. The Empakaai and Olmoti Craters are also visible. Game sightings from the camp itself can include Buffalo, Zebra, Porcupine and sometimes Elephant.
The Highlands has been constructed by using the traditional structure of the Masai huts with modern design. Each seems quite futuristic but the inside is very warm and comfortable. The suites and main area have been built at varying heights and narrow winding paths link each one together. The clear windows in front of each dome allow for stunning views of the Ngorongoro Crater below you making day break and sunset absolutely breathtaking.
Domed Suites
With just eight domed suites privately spaced amongst the trees there is also one family tent that sleeps two adults and two children with ample space for everyone. A deck that encircles each suite allows for views of the forest and the park below you. Bird life in the forest is fantastic and we added some great new species to our lists while we were there.
If you’re on honeymoon, request one of the furthest suites alternatively there is a dedicated honeymoon suite too. This has a bath on the veranda with stunning views.
There are no plug points in the rooms, only USB ports for charging certain items and there is only WiFi available in the rooms – a common trend these days to enhance guest interaction. Mornings can be quite cold and if it rains, umbrellas and gumboots are supplied. While the drive to the Crater may be a 45 minute game drive its well worth the location of where one sleeps.
