Situated in the south western corner of Kruger National Park this wilderness area is characterized by deep quiet valleys and high rocky outcrops with spectacular views. Mountain tops are accessed early in the morning to enjoy the vastness of the landscape. Plant life is diverse & unusual bird sightings are good.
The most remote of the Wilderness Trail’s Camp is situated in the far North of the Kruger National Park between Punda Maria camp and Pafuri with the spectacular Lanner and Levhuvhu gorges along the Levhuvhu River a big attraction. The camp, hidden in a secluded spot on the Madzaringwe River has the towering cliffs of the Soutpansberg Mountains in the background.
This trail is a spectacularly scenic wilderness area with high granite outcrops, deep valleys as well as a flatter undulating landscape. Elephant and buffalo are regularly seen as well as sable, mountain- and common reedbuck. Other more common species include zebra, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck, blue wildebeest and warthog.
The area is characterized by the high rocky outcrops with spectacular views for sun downers. This secluded rocky outcrop excludes trailists from the outside world as they can enjoy sun downers without interaction with other guests. The camp is rustic for a true African experience set amongst a grove of trees.
Situated on the banks of the Olifants river this wilderness area is very popular as it offers remote valleys and gorges where the river flows through the Lebombo mountains as well as flat open plains filled with game. The river offers large concentrations of hippo and crocodile. Birding as well as a diverse plant life are a big attraction for this popular wilderness trail.
The Whale Trail
Hiking in one of the largest marine reserves in South Africa the trail winds along the coastline with panoramic views of the coast and mountain fynbos. Whales, Eland, endangered Cape Mountain Zebra, leopard and comfy overnight huts keep this trail as the most popular of all in South Africa. Five days and fully catered for you.
This wilderness area is situated on the granitic landscape between Pretoriuskop and Skukuza. Both the Mbyamithi and Napi rivers flow through the area and offer scenic walks along the riverbanks with stunning large trees.
Both white and black rhino are regularly seen wallowing.
The Sweni river is surrounded by open flat thorntree savannah where large herds of game concentrates at certain times of the year. This in turn attracts large concentrations of predators and the biggest drawcard of the trail experience is to be part of this predator/prey relationship. Hearing lions roar at night occurs frequently as sound travels far in the bush.
Fish River Canyon
Descend into the depths of this ancient landscape of twisting river, hot springs and rare wild horses. Walking, sleeping and exploring this canyon is an adventure not to be missed – a real bucket list item! The landscape changes from arid to green as the walls of the canyon loom over you only to open into a vista at the next turn.
